Mid-range UNIX isn't known for 3D development, unlike high-end UNIX systems by Silicon Graphics (SGI).

With the growing popularity of Linux also 3D development systems are provided. By 1999 OpenGL with hardware-acceleration should be standard and some of the systems listed below become real fast.

For now most GL is rendered using the free OpenGL implementation called Mesa. The commercial X-server X-Accelerated will support OpenGL on the hardware level, check their site (November 1998).
