System Lab
1. Introduction
Here we feature some system-tools for UNIX (e.g. Linux, *BSD etc) and some hardware reviews of components.

2. Overview

Computing units are nowadays implemented in different scales (status 2001):
  • Supercomputer or clusters (computation) $10k - $10,000k
  • Server (computation, file-server) $2k - $1,000k
  • Workstation (graphic design, computation) $2k - $100k
  • Desktop (office) $1k - $5k
  • All-In-One ala iMac (office, thin-client) $1k - $3k
  • Notebook (portable office) $2k - $8k
  • Tablet PC, Internet Appliance, Web Pad (web-surfing, email) $100 - $1k
  • Pocket PC, Palm Top, PDA (notes, agenda) $100 - $1k
  • Cell Phone (notes, agenda, WAP, phone) $200 - $1k
  • Appliance Controllers (controlling appliances based on MCUs) $5-$50
Nowadays Desktop, Workstations and Server getting very close to each other, and make up with clustering also mini- or supercomputers. Internet Appliances catch up with functionality but are hardly available still (status Feb 2001). It is to be expected IA, Pocket PC, PDA and cell phone functionality will be merged.

Hardware Reviews

AnandTech.Com
Quality review site (MB, CPU, Disks etc)
Tom's Hardware
Another famous hardware review site (lot of ads)

There is NetExpress we recommend for custom-build UNIX workstations and servers, check their site as they provide a lot of background infos you don't find anywhere on the net otherwise (mainboards, CPU, memory, SCSI, etc). We are not connected to them, we just like to recommend good equipment and service.
